Der Ateneo Manila College Glee Club
Der Ateneo de Manila College Glee Club, gegründet 1921, ist der älteste Universitätschor in den Philippinen. Nachdem der Chor zunächst ein Männerchor war, wurde er später umgewandelt in einen Männer- und Frauenchor und schließlich 1971 in einen gemischten Chor. Der Chor gewann verschiedene internationale Wettbewerbe in Arezzo, Italien und in Cantonigros, Spanien im Jahre 1983, nahm 1989 an Festivals in Loreto, Italien und in Nancy, Frankreich teil, und gewann erst kürzlich alle Goldmedaillen und erste Preise in Maribor, Slowenien (7. - 9. April 2000), Goldmedaillen in Riva del Garda, Italien (16. - 19. April 2000) und alle höchsten Auszeichnungen in Cork, Irland (27. - 30. April 2000). Die Gruppe gewann außerdem alle möglichen Spitzenpreise in Tours, Frankreich (10. - 12. Juni 2000) und errang insgesamt fünf Hauptpreise in Tolosa, Spanien (28. Oktober - 1. November 2000).
Offizielle Auftritte für die Schule und wichtige nationale Konzerte und Festivals nehmen die meiste Zeit der Chromitglieder in Anspruch. Der Chor setzt sich hauptsächlich aus Studenten und Ehemaligen der Universität Ateneo de Manila zusammen. Mit der alljährlichen internationalen Tournee während der Sommermonate widmet der Chor seine Arbeit der Lobpreisung Gottes.


Dirigenten

Joel Navarro, Chefdirigent
Nachdem er von Fachleuten als begnadeter und vielseitiger Künstler entdeckt wurde, startete er seine Karriere mit soliden Leistungen sowohl bei Auftritten als auch in seiner Lehrtätigkeit. Seit nunmehr einundzwanzig Jahren ist er die treibende Kraft, die hinter den erworbenen Erfolgen des Ateneo de Manila College Glee Club steht. Neben seiner Beratertätigkeit für Wettbewerbe bei nationalen Musikwettstreiten für junge Künstler und als Vizepräsident der Philippinischen Vereinigung für Chormusik ist er derzeit der Vorsitzende der Fakultät für Dirigenten und Chorgesang des Musikkollegs der Universität der Philippinen, wo er im Fach Chorleitung als Bachelor und Master abschloß.


Jonathan Velasco, Gastdirigent
Jonathan Velasco studierte Klavier und Gesang am Musikkolleg der Universität der Philippinen. Er war von 1979 bis 1981 Mitglied des UP Saringhimig und wechselte 1981 zu den Madrigal Singers der Universität der Philippinen, wo er zwei Jahre später Assistent des Chorleiters wurde. Er schloß seine Studien an der Berliner Kirchenmusikschule mit Auszeichnung ab. Nachdem er in die Philippinen zurückkehrte, nahm er seine Tätigkeit in der Fakultät der Dirigenten des Asiatischen Instituts für Liturgie und Musik auf und wurde 1995 zum Dekan ernannt. Er leitet den Schulchor des Asiatischen Instituts für Liturgie und Musik und den Philippinischen Kammerchor. Er war der erste Filipino und Asiate, der 1996 gebeten wurde, die Hauptdirigentenstelle des Weltjugendchors zu übernehmen, und er wird in Wintersaison 2001-2002 wieder als einer der Hauptdirigenten in Belgien und Israel dabei sein. Er war während der europäischen Wettstreit-Tournee 2000 des Ateneo de Manila College Glee Club Gastdirigent. Mit ihm errang die Gruppe Preise bei Wettbewerben und Festivals.

THE ATENEO DE MANILA COLLEGE GLEE CLUB
Founded in 1921, the Ateneo de Manila College Glee Club is the oldest university choral group in the Philippines. Originally established as a boys' choir, the group was later transformed into an all-male choir and eventually into a mixed choir in 1971. The choir has won in different international competitions in Arezzo, Italy and Cantonigros, Spain in 1983, participated in festivals in Loreto, Italy and Nancy, France in 1989, and the most recent, won all the gold medals and first prizes in Maribor, Slovenia (7-9 April 2000); Gold medals in Riva del Garda, Italy (16-19 April 2000); and all the major awards in Cork, Ireland (27-30 April 2000). The group also won all the possible top prizes in Tours, France (10-12 June 2000), and garnered a total of five major awards in Tolosa, Spain (28 October-1 November 2000).
Performing for official school functions and important national concerts and festivals takes up most of the time of the members, who are composed mostly of students and alumni of the Ateneo de Manila University. Undergoing a yearly international tour during the summer months, the group has dedicated itself to performing music for the greater glory of God in the service of man.




CONDUCTORS

Joel Navarro (Principal Conductor)
Recognized by his peers as a gifted and versatile musical artist, Joel Navarro has a career built upon solid achievement in the performing stage and in the academe. For twenty-one years now, he has been the driving force behind the laurels upon which the Ateneo de Manila College Glee Club rests. Aside from being a consultant for Choral Competitions in the National Music Competition for Young Artists, and Vice-Chair of the Philippine Federation for Choral Music, he is presently the Chair of Conducting and Choral Ensemble Department of the University of the Philippines College of Music, where he finished his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Choral Conducting.


Jonathan Velasco (Guest Conductor)
Jonathan Velasco majored in Piano and Voice at the University of the Philippines College of Music. He was a member of UP Saringhimig from 1979 to 1981 and later joined the University of the Philippines Madrigal Singers in 1981 becoming assistant choirmaster two years later. He completed his advanced studies at the Berliner Kirchenmusikschule with distinction. Returning to the Philippines, he joined the Choral Conducting faculty of the Asian Institute for Liturgy and Music and was appointed Dean of Studies in 1995. He conducts the school choir of the Asian Institute for Liturgy and Music and the Philippine Chamber Choir. He was the first Filipino and Asian invited to be the Principal Conductor of the World Youth Choir in 1996 and will be featured again as one of the Principal Conductors in the winter session of the World Youth Choir in Belgium and Israel 2001-2002. He was guest conductor of the Ateneo de Manila College Glee Club during the European competition tours of 2000, leading the group in award-winning performances at competitions and festivals.
